The Desire to Be Better

The Desire to Be Better

plus-size-fashion-blog-how-to-wear-a-patterned-coat-3The votes are tallied and boxes checked and I can’t help but feel disappointment. It’s not the outcome I hoped for. I am not confident in our countries direction with this new leadership. I am nervous.  But today I remind myself that every cloud has a silver lining. I don’t  think the US has been this emotionally involved in an election in a long time. Voter turn our was up nearly 5% with highly contested counties reporting voter turn out at over 70%.  So regardless of who has won, it feels like America’s citizens are starting to care.  We so long have been apathetic to it all and all I can hope is that in four years that renewed interest turns into citizens demanding more from their candidates. Better behavior. Better plans. Better thought. But first we have to be better. And the care and passion many voters have had this election season, shows that we can and hopefully will be better. So while all this is overwhelming and for some deeply disappointing, I refuse to buy into the end of the world philosophy that seems to be echoing through many’s hearts today.  I believe is we can move forward if we continue to invest our emotions and energy into shaping America into the place we want to live.  I won’t be easy, but the best things rarely are.

We All Have Flaws.

One thing I have worked hard to learn- and then regularly remind myself – is that perfect doesn’t exist. It’s really easy to see the flaws in things. This situation is teeming with flaws.  However, the flaws are ALWAYS less than the good.  We are simply trained to see what something can’t be versus what it can become. I believe one statement: people are mostly made of good. And we all have terrible ways of acting out on our own self  interests, but at our core rarely are our intentions solely malicious. I am reminding myself of this today.

Self Love Through A Change in Perspective.plus-size-fashion-blog-how-to-wear-a-patterned-coat-4

This oddly dove tails into one of the main ways I have found to improve my self perception.  We choose to see the broken bits. We choose to the focus on the ways we are incapable, mediocre, and flawed. But there are so many many ways we are beautiful, impactful, and needed. To truly love ourselves, grow our confidence, and push away doubt- we must focus on our potential instead of our roadblocks. We have to choose to change our perspective and focus on just how powerful and meaningful we can become.plus-size-fashion-blog-how-to-wear-a-patterned-coat-5

For example, I could see myself as loud, over the top, emotional and dramatic.  Focus on how I’ve never been thin, have a hunchback, and patches of dry skin.  Invest my energy in analyzing how I exaggerate,  forget things, and  sometimes I drowned myself in my work so I don’t realize that I am lonely.

Or I could see myself as a brilliant creative thinker, who works hard, and never gives up. I could remember that give nearly everything I have to others, because  as long as I am not in need and I have more to give. I can see the way I always find a way to make people lough, smile at strangers, and regularly help others find direction in their careers. I can reflect how I have an uncanny knack to make others feel comfortable, even when I myself might feel out of place.

A Very Personal Example

plus-size-fashion-blog-how-to-wear-a-patterned-coat-2

Everyday I am presented with a wide array of opportunities to see my flaws or see my potential. For example, yesterday I felt disconnected from something and I started to question whether this was a result of me not being good enough. But as soon as I realized this, I committed to re-framing my perspective. Instead of thinking about what was wrong with me and having a mini pity party, I sucked it up and began to think about what I cold do to feel more plugged in. I focused on my potential to turn the situation around, which led to me making a few small tweaks. My day and feelings lightend. The choice was mine. I don’t always make the right choice, but the focus on constantly analyzing how I can see my potential has led to a significant increase in appreciation for myself. It’s help me battle demons. It’s helped me to shift the assessment of my value from external analysis to one of self awareness and love. I value and love myself because I am aware of what I capable of- now and in the future.plus-size-fashion-blog-how-to-wear-a-patterned-coat-6So today when everything seems less then ideal. When the world seems broken. When you feel bruised. Don’t Panic. Instead of putting energy into the loss, but your heart into the change. What needs to happen, so that this doesn’t happen again.  How can your voice help educate and shape the way citizens see each other? How can protect those who now feel unsupported and unsafe? Now that people are angry and passionate, this is the exact time to focus that energy into the change. We can’t change the past, but we can shape the future.  That’s what’s on my mind today.

Queen of Lace: Velvet Plus Size Outfit Inspiration

plus size velvet dress boohoo jordyn woodsThis Jordyn Woods for boo hoo plus size dress spoke to me from the pages of the internet. It screamed buy me. It gave my such strong 90s rocker babe vibes I couldn’t help but grab it and style the perfect plus size velvet look. The truth is with a dress like this, you don’t really need much. Just attitude, and a killer set of boots.
plus size velvet dress boohoo jordyn woodsI am really excited about the back of this dress and it’s lacy lacy surprise. My only caveat is that it’s a literal struggle to figure out how to put the dress on as the straps are attached in this weird way that left me a bit confused on how to actually wear it. It looks super fantastic on, but super intimidating on the hanger. It’s like a fashion puzzle.
plus size velvet dress boohoo jordyn woodsAs for these rock and roll ready boots, I found these stunners at Target. The bright maroon bejeweled velvet heel and fake suede boots are basically magic in a shoe. You know me, if it’s sparkly I generally need it. The royally bedazzled heel is simply bananas. And it they don’t look cheap. They look like I shouldn’t be able to afford them, but shock and awe they’re super affordable.

I was thinking today about how sometimes you don’t need a lot to feel like a goddess. A well cut dress and an amazing set of heels and boom you’re done. I would like to say I had some amazing styling here, but really other than bring some Madonna vibes with some amazing silver necklaces from my archive… I the dress and shoes did most the work.

Plus Size Fall Fashion Inspiration: Sheerly Bohemian

Plus Size Fall Fashion Inspiration: Sheerly Bohemian

For the next 5 days, I am going to be showing off my favorite fall trends, made for plus size bodies. To kick things off I’m showcasing one of my favorite trends- modern bohemian. This trend takes hippy vibes and mixes them with decidedly urban elements to create a new style aesthetic that is both nostalgic and modern. Plus size fall fashion trends 2016 bohemian 1

You can spot this trend cropping up everywhere if you look for the signs. First and foremost- deconstructed denim. Jeans this season provide a variety of washes all with a truly lived in feeling. Expect everything from hole filled denims, to completely reconstructed denims- like this pair from Lovesick.

Second there’s a return of bohemian inspired elements, on refreshing forms. Expect to see unexpected embroidery, folk style prints, and sheer prairie cuts ( like this dress from Eloquii). This shirt is a perfect example- its a refreshed take on a sheer over shirt with  a Scandinavian inspired embroidery. The result is a cool way to pop some color, while still rocking an of the time silhouette.

Another unusually pairing is the resurgence of velvet on fashion forward and bold accessories. I am digging velvet chokers- because of my unhealthy love of all things 90s – like this one from alapopjewelery on Etsy. The key is a one per outfit rule, so I added a nod to this other fall fashion trend by adding a little funky chunky crushed velvet to my step.

What’s in my Underwear Drawer: Part 1- Bralettes

What’s in my Underwear Drawer: Part 1- Bralettes

So months a go I reached a dark place in my life. My underwear drawer needed a makeover- stat. I had been reduced to a few pairs of panties  I loved, but were busted. Worse yet,  had no clue where I had actually purchased them from. Sure I had other pairs of underwear, but every pair I seemed to buy fell apart on me after one of two wears or were cut so poorly I had to wear 30x my normal size. Basically putting on panties, was a daily sense of ugh. My bras were in just as poor a state. The underwires had started a rebellion and were leaving my over the should boulder holders in masses. I hated the way they felt. I hated the way they looked. I just plain hated them.  Based on the state of my closest, I got my credit card out and began a Lewis and Clarke expedition through the land of negligee. Over the next 3 weeks I’ll be sharing my results.

Plus size underwear bralette

First up, my favorite bralettes. Important thing to note: The more support you get, the less of the “I’m wearing pajama jam underwear” feeling you get. I feel like this is a necessary trade off, but I can’t help but ask the time traveling future me to Bill and Ted me back a solution where I don’t have to make trade offs.

Forever 21: These are the most comfortable bralettes I’ve come across. They’re excellent for adding extra support to a beach dress or to travel in. The cons: if it’s cold people will know, they offer less over all support than other bralettes and aren’t great as an all-purpose solution. These sell out fast, so if you see one, buy it. It wont be available for long.

Wet Seal: A new entrant to the plus size game, Wet Seal’s bralettes sell out less quickly than Forever 21 and offer comparable support. I am really digging their color options as well.  I’ve had the opportunity to try them on, but unfortunately my credit card gave me a frowny face when it came time to purchase. Wet Seal Plus Size BraletteBoohoo: These are my go to for sexy night looks, where I plan to wear the bralette as more of of a shirt than a bra. They fit well and have the best nipple coverage of the three bralette brands I have in rotation. That said, they still don’t have enough support to keep the girls from flying solo during a night of dancing.

Boo Hoo Plus Size Bralettes

Torrid: Torrid makes the best bralette for support hands down.  They are well cut and cute. While they lack the extreme comfort of the less supportive bras, you wont have surprise boob movement or be able to tell the weather to strangers based on your nips. Over all they are still 100% more comfortable then a traditional bra, while providing oodles of sassy support.
