How to Rock The Velvet In-Between

Velvet or Velour is one of those weird fabrics that seems to only to live at the polar ends of the dressing spectrum. It’s either pieces fit for pajama lounge time or its found in elegant gowns and fancy waistcoats. Until this season, that is. Playful in-between velvet items have been popping up all over the place and I couldn’t help but share a few looks to inspire you all to look at velvet a little bit differently.

Urban Cool

This fun and functional Torrid velvet skirt adds a kick of sass to this awesome ‘Thick Hunny” t-shirt from Luella. Thrown on with my favorite gold sneakers (similar) and a pair of classic gold oversized earrings, this outfit is your go to for casual cool.

Romantic Country

One might argue that a velvet dress is automatically formal. I say, “NAY.” The tiered seams of this Simply Be velvet dress add a low key feel, while the black boots  from Modcloth add a slight nod to the current equestrian trend.  Velvet can be heavy, so to keep this look visually light, I added a gold accent belt (similar) for definition and my favorite black tassel earrings from amazon.

Eccentric Indie

I love this Modcloth pinafore because it’s such a unique use of velvet and matures a clothing item that is often reserved for children. I paired it with fun striped trumpet sleeve shirt I snagged at Primark in the UK (only available in store) and some comfy ballet inspired flats from Target. It’s a 3 piece look that is anything but simple.

Other Great Velvet Items

Here are some other great unexpected velvet pieces that might be fun to incorporate into your everyday wardrobe.

Feeling Like a Holiday Princess in SimplyBe

Feeling Like a Holiday Princess in SimplyBe

plus-size-holiday-outfit-ideas-simplybe-velvet-tulle-dress-3As part of SimplyBe’s winter campaign, I had the opportunity to style this amazing sugar plum magic wonder dress. Strutting in this holiday frock creates such an amazing juxtaposition of feelings. On one hand I feel like all I need is a tiara and lots of jelly bracelets to fully live out all my pretty pretty princess dreams. On the other hand, I feel like just by wearing this I suddenly have lots and lots of money and lots and lots of scantily clad man servants to do my bidding. It’s powerful to feel, at the same time, like a rich sexy baroness and an innocent nubile princess. In short, this dress is my made of my dreams and I love it.

About this Dress
plus-size-holiday-outfit-ideas-simplybe-velvet-tulle-dress-2

The bodice of this Simply Be holiday dress is this amazing minx colored velvet and the bottom is composed of two layers of  corresponding soft mesh tulle (not the scratchy kind). The skirt is lined, which is nice, because I like to protect the nether regions from public appearances. I’m not famous enough where stuff like that is acceptable. I also love how the waist band of the dress has a delicate flourish of pleated tulle. It’s a well thought out detail.

SimplyBe is an international store so if you shop with them you’ll want to place orders by December 11th for standard delivery and December 14th for expedited shipping.

How I Styled This Look

Given the dress was such a stunner already, I tried to keep the finishing touches light. I added a black leather obi belt to cinch and emphasize my waist. I donned a pair of comfortable, but fancy wedges I’ve had in my closet for years. The added just the right amount of sparkle.  To add a touch of luxe, I added a gorgeous gray faux fur stole (sadly all sold out, but I love this alternative),  also snagged online at SimplyBe.

To top off the look, I added a rebellious necklace- something to make sure the final result wasn’t overly cutesy. The spiked necklace reminds people that while I am all luxe and adorable, I’m still a kick butt femme fatale who don’t take no crud from no one. The end result is the perfect girls night out look.

Tuesday I amped up the sexual prowess with a lovely steal of a dress from ideel. The red heels from UK’s New Look said, Take me serious or I will cut you. I accessorized the look with sleek hair, red MAC lipstick and a bold Vince Comuto cocktail ring.

Plus size fashion blog plus size outfit ideas 3Wednesday I had my favorite costar tag along to show of one of my favorite summer looks. The jacket is from the most recent release from Fabletics the crop is a vintage tee that I got crafty with and created myself. The jeans- shocker- are from Eddie Bauer proving that you really should experiment and  shop everywhere. Lastly the shoes are Cole Haan.

I snazzed up the look with my favorite chucks, a reclaimed vintage necklace and a steal of a monster hat from Five Below. Also pigtails, I forgot how cute you could be!

plus size fashion blog plus size outfit ideas 5Friday I played homage to my addiction for jail time rabble rousing in this Orange is the New Black inspired look. I’m wearing a Urban Outfitters pork pie hat ( from the men’s section) and bold statement earrings (illlllluminatiiii) from Top Shop and my favorite orange tunic from New Look. I threw on my comfy Old Navy leggings and the most comfortable heeled boots in the world from Jones to round the look out. I ended up looking criminally good.

I paired one of my favorite seasonal finds, a wide brimmed hat from Five Below, with a pin up style suit from Target. I layered the look with an aztec inspired necklace from Oliver Bonas, a lovely $7 sarong from Amazon and some sassy metallic leather flats from Asos.

plus size fashion blog plus size outfit ideas 7Sunday I kept it lazy, comfy and low key. I styled my hair with a vintage scarf tied into a bow and added depth by wearing it with a patterned tunic from Marimekko. Styled with a pair of  basic black capris, a pair of red Cole Haan brogues and stand out gold statement necklace… this low key look still turns heads.
